Understanding the Role of Neuroscience, Attachment and Affect Regulation - 5Hrs CPD
Workshop Overview
Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD) is a complex clinical presentation that may involve difficulties with emotional regulation, shame, attachment and interpersonal relationships.
This workshop introduces Nathan Jones's Integrative Approach for Treating Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (IAT-CSBD), a neurobiologically informed clinical framework that integrates behavioural, developmental and relational approaches to treatment.
Drawing upon contemporary neuroscience, attachment theory and Dr Allan Schore's Regulation Theory, the training explores how difficulties with emotional regulation, attachment and early relational experiences may contribute to the development and maintenance of compulsive sexual behaviours.
The workshop considers the importance of moving beyond behavioural symptom management to explore the underlying psychological, developmental and relational processes that may contribute to compulsive sexual behaviour. Particular attention is given to the therapeutic relationship as a potential source of co-regulation, emotional safety and reparative relational experiences.
Through clinical examples and practical applications, participants will explore how an integrative approach can inform assessment, formulation and treatment, including work with problematic pornography use and more complex sexual presentations.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will have had the opportunity to:
1. Explore the clinical presentation of Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder within the ICD-11 diagnostic framework, including its distinction from other forms of problematic sexual behaviour.
2. Examine the neurobiological and developmental processes that may contribute to the development and maintenance of compulsive sexual behaviours.
3. Understand the relationship between shame, attachment difficulties, developmental trauma and emotional dysregulation and consider their implications for clinical formulation and treatment.
4. Explore Allan Schore's Regulation Theory, including right-brain processes, implicit communication, co-regulation and the therapeutic relationship.
5. Examine the four stages of the IAT-CSBD treatment framework:
o Stage 1: Comprehensive assessment and clinical formulation.
o Stage 2: Stabilisation through attention training, CBT and third-wave behavioural interventions.
o Stage 3: Attachment-focused and inner child therapeutic interventions.
o Stage 4: Relational psychotherapy and continued therapeutic integration.
6. Consider the practical application of integrative interventions when working with compulsive sexual behaviour, problematic pornography use and complex clinical presentations
Presenter Biography -
Nathan Jones - Founder and Clinical Director, London Centre for Addictions
Nathan Jones is a BACP-accredited psychotherapist specialising in the assessment and treatment of Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD) and related complex sexual presentations. He is the Founder and Clinical Director of the London Centre for Addictions, where his clinical work focuses on the psychological, developmental and relational processes associated with compulsive sexual behaviour.
His specialist practice encompasses problematic pornography use, compulsive sexual behaviours, paraphilic disorders and individuals involved in internet-related sexual offending, including offences involving Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).
Nathan was mentored by the late Dr Thaddeus Birchard, a pioneering UK clinician in the treatment of problematic sexual behaviour and has received clinical supervision and mentorship from Dr Alexandra Katehakis in the United States. These professional influences, alongside his engagement with contemporary developmental neuroscience and attachment research, have contributed to the development of his Integrative Approach for Treating Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (IAT-CSBD).
His clinical framework draws particularly upon Regulation Theory, integrating behavioural interventions with attachment-focused, developmental and relational psychotherapy. Central to his approach is an understanding of the role of emotional dysregulation, shame and early relational experiences, alongside the potential of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate emotional regulation and psychological change.
Nathan is currently completing a Professional Doctorate in Psychotherapy at the University of Central Lancashire, researching the lived experiences of psychotherapists navigating relational depth in the treatment of compulsive sexual behaviour through the lens of affect regulation. His doctoral research reflects his longstanding clinical interest in the therapeutic relationship and the processes through which emotional regulation and relational change may occur.
Alongside his clinical practice, Nathan provides consultancy to specialist treatment centres across the UK and Europe and delivers CPD-accredited training to mental health professionals. He is regularly invited to deliver guest lectures at universities across the UK, contributing to postgraduate teaching at MSc level in the areas of compulsive sexual behaviour, attachment, developmental trauma and affect regulation.
Nathan has also presented at national and international conferences, including the International Attachment Conference in Ulm, Germany. His clinical teaching draws upon contemporary neuroscience, attachment theory and relational psychotherapy, with particular emphasis on translating theoretical understanding into practical therapeutic interventions.
He is co-author, alongside Dr Eddie Capparucci, of Understanding Your Inner Child and Overcoming Addiction: A Recovery Manual and Workbook, published by Routledge.
